A Day in the Life of the Man Behind Murder on the Menu

When Canadian born Bruce Henry went to Ireland in 2009, the naturally warm and friendly nature of the Irish folk made him decide to stay. Now, he brings a part of his life in Canada by providing the locals with alternative entertainment in the form of murder mystery games.

What made you decide to start Murder on the Menu?

I started Murder on the Menu because I love to laugh, I love to have fun and I’m passionate about great entertainment and great service. I wanted to develop a business that focused on the experience, something that was interactive, fun and above all, unique. It’s one of the main reasons we’ve been so successful in such a short period of time. I do everything I can to meet the expectations of our customers and then find opportunities to exceed them where possible. So far it’s worked out really well for us as we’re Ireland’s fastest growing entertainment company in the country.

Describe a typical day in the life of Murder on the Menu?

Well I work from home so that’s a blessing as well as a curse sometimes. The day starts around 7am, I take the dog for a walk (his name’s Captain and he’s a little Jack Russell), then around 7:30am its time to work. I boil the kettle, make a cup of coffee and then spend the next 2 hours working on emails.

After that I begin making phone calls to hotels & our costume supplier to ensure that everything we need for the weekends hen parties is ready to go.

We do a lot of work with companies all over Ireland so my afternoons are usually travelling from meeting to meeting, negotiating new contracts and renewing existing ones. It’s very exciting.

Around 3-4pm, it’s time to refuel with another coffee, catch up on a few emails that have come in.

The rest of the day/evening is then spent working on new murder mysteries, new games & new activities for future hens.

What has been your best achievement?

I have a lot of really great achievements that I’m proud of. I’ve been nominated and won a number of awards within my first year of business and I’ve had a lot of really exciting things happen.

If I had to choose just one achievement as my best one, I’d have to say my best achievements are when I receive emails from hens expressing their gratitude and thanks. As I said earlier, I started this business because I love to laugh and I love to have a good time and it’s a dream come true when people email me and tell me what a great time they had and how much they appreciated it. In my opinion, it’s not good enough to provide a service that people like. My goal is to provide an experience people love.

What are your hobbies/past-times?

I love to cook and I would categorize myself as a “foodie”. Growing up in a family of 5, the most important time of the day was dinner time. It was a place where everyone came to the table, my mom always prepared something lovely and tasty and we’d sit down, back in the day when nobody had a mobile phone, and just talk. Food has a remarkable way of bringing people together and I think that’s what I love about it.

Coffee or Ice-Cream?

Why not pour a hot shot of espresso over the ice cream? That sounds good… Excuse me *boils the kettle*
